Lovely, Dark & Deep

A moody, shadowy, enigmatic color palette in the kitchen? Yes, please!

The traditional white kitchen will always have a place in our hearts, but this fall we are diving into the deep end with a full range of interesting color combinations that range from deepest black mixed with brass, charcoal, navy blue, and even shades of brown. All of the designers in our portfolio used rich colors but added in touches of shine and sparkle, and contrasting and reflective surfaces to really make those deep hues pop.

In this Art Deco–inspired kitchen by Terese Poulos of Relic Design, high-gloss cabinetry by Bauteam has integrated gold channel lights that reflect off the quartzite countertops. A custom brass hood made by a local artisan adds drama. The black marble, herringbone-patterned backsplash is from Artistic Tile. Lining the island, counter stools by Artistic Frame, through DeAurora, are covered in fabric by Romo. A vinyl wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries creates texture, and appliances by Sub-Zero and Wolf add maximum functionality. A mirrored-bar nook reflects all of the glamour and holds fine crystal barware for entertaining. Just as jewelry completes a fabulous ensemble, crystal pendants by Fine Art Lamps, through CAI Designs, complete this opulent kitchen. Photography by Michael Kaskel

In a vintage property that was formerly a seminary school, En Masse Architecture and Design combined the former kitchen, bath, and pantry, successfully creating a new, more functional space while being mindful of the historic nature of the building. The New Style cabinetry is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Regent Green, and echoes colors used throughout the house. Faucets from Brizo. Photography by Jeffrey Johnson

For an apartment in the historic 1260 Astor, designed by Phillip Maher in 1929, designer Jessica Lagrange and her team restored important architectural details and introduced elegant hardware, eglomise finishes, and nature-inspired accents that evoke the Art Deco era of the original design. Patinated brass hardware by Katonah Architectural Hardware looks as though it is original to the custom, black cabinetry. Stone by Artistic Tile. Faucet by Waterworks. Photography by William Waldron

Designer Brianne Bishop’s repeat clients asked her to design a newly- built home for their growing family, in the thick of the pandemic, and the home was ready just as the couple welcomed a baby. Bishop created a warm, elegant, and modern kitchen and dining area with a range of brown shades from deep, dark chocolate to walnut to blonde.
