Pitch Perfect

From DJ booths to grand pianos, music takes center stage.

Pitch Perfect

What do you do with an unused garage in the back of your home? Well, if you are a member of a piano conservatory in Los Angeles, you hire designer Kevin Klein to transform it into a mini concert venue, complete with a bar, stained-glass skylights, and a custom chandelier that hangs over a conversation pit upholstered in Mongolian lamb fur, from Mimi London, through David Sutherland. The space opens fully to the outdoors, where an inviting pool and landscaped gardens await. The centerpiece, a custom Bosendorfer concert piano, takes pride of place. Klein says, “There is an obvious element of playfulness to the space that is seemingly contradictory to a high-end, old-world-inspired piano club, but that is exactly what the client wanted.”

Left: Postcard is a modern cafe and lounge in Chicago’s West Loop, where music defines the experience. Conceived with travel brand Monos, the space unfolds around sound: Ste Marie shaped monolithic timber panels, buttery leather, and sheer drapery into an atmospheric space that is balanced between openness and enclosure. Part listening room, part cafe, Postcard incorporates analog elements such as records, vintage monitors, and projected archival imagery, all contributing to the sensory experience. Right: Designer Chad Dorsey created this music area just off the dining room of a client’s home in Dallas, Texas. “We tucked it in front of the memoir wall—curated with the homeowner’s prized possessions and featuring artwork centered on human rights and equality,” says Dorsey. “This family built their home around gathering people, whether it’s a dinner party or a fundraiser for a cause they care about, so it mattered to me that the space gave people a reason to get up from the table and keep the evening going.” Benjamin Moore’s Vanilla Milkshake adorns the walls, with Pale Oak on the baseboards.

The team at Christie Hines Designs transformed a formerly little-used sitting room into a music room to give the homeowner a fresh space to play and entertain. The talented family of musicians, including several guitarists, singers, pianists, and a drummer, needed a space for musical interludes, and to house their over 18 guitars, many passed down from one generation to the next. On the opposite side from this seating area, the design team created a custom guitar case out of rift-sawn white oak. An Omexco wallcovering, through Romo, adds texture. The vintage Thonet armchairs are covered in fabric from Schumacher, and the custom sofa is covered in Kate Spade camel velvet, through Kravet.

For this living room in San Francisco, designer Regan Baker worked with the client’s vintage purple Edra Boa sofa and a grand piano. They added graphic interest behind the piano with custom, built-in steel bookshelves to house an extensive library, collected objects, and accessories, providing warmth and personality to the clean, modern architecture. The built-in sofa is covered in Zinc Textile, through Romo, with leather trim from Holly Hunt. An assortment of plush throw pillows on the sofa are covered in textiles from Perennials and S. Harris.
